Creating Leadership in Your Life with Danny Marriner
Danny Marriner is a long time friend, personal trainer and life coach. Over the last twenty years Danny has been helping hundreds of people crush their goals, and get into better physical and mental shape. Can You Learn a Calling In Life?
Most people who are born to be an entrepreneur have a “feeling” about it. I knew I was going to be entrepreneur before I even knew about the word. I knew I wanted to build businesses, and be in leadership positions. The realisation isn’t always instant. I took my time. Sometimes you spend decades trying to figure it out – but you always know.
From my perspective, I believe you can’t just learn how to do it, it has to be in you. Entrepreneurship requires a strength like no other. Yes – you can learn the skills needed to do the job. But can you do it well? Can you persevere through the rough times? Can you find happiness in entrepreneurship?
Danny has just recently stepped into the leadership space. It wasn’t a decision he took lightly. He has been drawn to leadership positions his entire life, and now he’s fully embracing the role. Danny believes a great leader doesn’t need to say all the right things. Rather it’s all in how you deliver what you say, and whether your actions speak afterwards.

What holds us back from pushing our limits?
Pushing your limits can manifest in different forms, whether you’re crushing it in the gym, or making moves in the workplace. No matter how you look at it – there is always a mental and physical side to the equation.
Transformation won’t happen overnight. Building tolerance is like stretching a muscle. You slowly build up tolerance, and you slowly increase your limit. Body transformations for example – if you’re able to conquer the hardships of training then you’ll be able to transfer this skill into other aspects of your life.
I asked Danny what he believes holds us back from pushing our limits.
“It comes down to one simple thing: It comes down to how you value anything. Whatever you value in your life you prioritise proportionally. If you’re only pushing it 70-80% you only value and prioritise it 70-80%,” Danny says.
Everything comes back to what your purpose is, and what you value in life. To excel and to perform consistently at 100% you need to value the work you’re doing.
My challenge to you – next time you’re working out, or working on a menial task, stop and take a minute to think about what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it. A moment of self-reflection can give you perspective, and shift the quality of the output.
Mentors and how they shape us
Having a great mentor in your life can stop you from making mistakes and shed light on sticky situations. The challenge in this is: Finding the right mentor. It sounds daunting – and it can be – depending on what you’re looking for.
Everyone (of any age) has the potential to be a great mentor. You just need to be open enough for it to happen.
Two of Danny’s greatest mentors in his life are:
- His wife – “My greatest teacher”
- Henare O’Brien
Danny shared with me some great wisdom he learnt from Henare.
“You seek so much information from me, when your wife is the greatest mentor you’ll ever have,” Danny quotes Henare.
We often overlook the advice, wisdom and information from our immediate circle. We seek information from people who are “known” and appear like they know something you don’t. But we never get what we truly seek from the people “known” in your space. Rather we receive our best advice and guidance from our immediate circle, often without realising it.
Danny suggests you take a moment and reflect on the people you have around you, and listen to the words of encouragement and support they provide on the daily.
